A practical room by room order for decluttering a Gold Coast home without creating more chaos in the process.
Before you start
Choose one finish line. It might be a clear dining table, a usable bedroom floor or a garage path. Do not empty every cupboard at once. Work in a contained zone and keep bags or boxes ready for donate, relocate, recycle and rubbish.
Kitchen and pantry
Start with obvious rubbish and expired food. Group duplicates. Keep everyday cookware and appliances closest to where they are used. Avoid buying containers until the total volume has been reduced.
Bedrooms and wardrobes
Clear the floor first, then the bed and bedside surfaces. Work through clothing by type. Separate laundry, repairs and items that belong elsewhere. Make the wardrobe fit the current season and actual routine.
Living areas
Remove items that do not belong in the room, then reduce paper, toys, cables and decorative overflow. Keep the main surfaces usable and give frequently used items a simple home.
Bathrooms and linen
Dispose of empty or expired products, group backups and keep daily items easy to reach. Linen works better when sheet sets, towels and spare bedding are grouped by use rather than packed into every available shelf.
Garage, shed and storage
Create broad categories before fine sorting. Tools, garden items, sports gear, camping gear, hardware and household storage should each have a defined zone. Keep walkways and access points clear.
Finish with what is leaving
A declutter is not complete if donation bags and rubbish sit in the hallway for weeks. Decide the next destination and timeframe for each category that is leaving the home.
